We, and the characters, are left with 1,000 questions about what happens next and what the consequences are, but we just do not get any answers. Huge things happen and then the book is just over. The interactions between gods, regular people, and the land were interesting but something about the whole thing fell flat. Also, Was I supposed to care about Mawatt? Because I did not.įurther, the world was kind of flat and lifeless. Nothing ever came of it which just made it all worse. That is all people talked about in relation to her, it was all people spoke to her about, and it was all she ever said. She was only spoken about in a sexual manner, in that her only personality trait was that people want to screw her. One character in particular, Tikaz, was really poorly done. I also did not find the characters outside of the narrator to be particularly well rounded, including Eolo. And often it feels as though she is switching up the order of words just to make it sound more 'fantasy' and to the detriment of clarity. The first sentence contains the word forest twice, for example. However, I found the writing to be very poor. The reveals and the connections between the two story lines are slow but spread out so that there isn't one giant twist at the end. It is written in the second person where the narrator starts at the beginning of their story and the beginning of Eolo's story concurrently. I found the premise and the storytelling to be really interesting. This book was kind of a mixed bag for me.
